Inventions influence many aspects of life, such as transport and communication. In the past, trains used the steam from hot water to move.  Today they use diesel, electricity and magnets for power. The first computer was invented in 1837. The first telephone in 1876.  Today we use smartphones.  Smartphones act as a telephone and computer. The first aeroplane was invented in 1903 and could carry one person for 30 minutes.  Today’s aeroplanes carry hundreds of people and can fly very long distances. Machines can be classified as simple or complex. - Simple machines have few or no moving parts. - We can create a complex machine by putting two or more simple machines together to perform a new function. We can use tools to help us put machines together and take them apart.

Energy comes from different sources. RENEWABLE energy sources don`t run out and don`t cause pollution. The Sun, the wind and water are renewable energy sources. NON- RENEWABLE energy sources cause pollution and we cannot replace them. Oil, coal and gas are non-renewable energy sources.

Thermal energy is found in anything which is hot or produces heat. The Sun gives off a lot of thermal energy. 2. Electrical energy is used innlots of things at home. 3. Light energy allow you to see objects. 4. Kinetic energy is produced by movement. 5. Sound energy is priduced by things that make noise.

Everything around you is made up of MATTER.  Matter can exist as a liquid, a solid or a gas. 1. Gases do not have a definite shape or volume.  They fill the containers they are put in. 2. Liquids do not have a definite shape but they have a definite volume. 3. Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume. - Matter can go through physical changes .  One example is a change of shape. Another example of a physical change is a change of state .  This water has changed its state from a liquid to a solid.
